We're Now Offering PHP for Substance Use and Mental Health. Here's What That Means For You.

At Solutions for Change, we’ve always believed that effective mental health treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. Different people need different levels of support, and that support should be able to change as you do.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that we are now offering a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for both substance use disorders and mental health at our Dallas-area location. Whether you’re stepping down from inpatient care, navigating early recovery, needing support with a mental health crisis, or simply need more structure than weekly therapy provides, PHP may be exactly the level of care you’ve been looking for.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

If you haven’t heard the term before, you’re not alone. PHP is one of the most effective — and most misunderstood — levels of mental health care available.

A Partial Hospitalization Program is a structured, intensive outpatient treatment option that typically meets five days per week for five to six hours per day. You receive residential-level support and clinical programming during the day, then return home in the evenings.

PHP at Solutions for Change includes a combination of:

  • Group therapy sessions
  • Individual therapy
  • Skills-based programming focused on coping, emotional regulation, and recovery
  • Clinical oversight and care coordination

It’s intensive, but it’s also flexible. You’re home with your family or in sober living, sleeping in your own bed, and maintaining connections to the people and routines that matter to you.

How Is PHP Different from IOP?

We already offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for both mental health and addiction recovery, and a common question we hear is: what’s the difference?

Think of it as a spectrum of care. Here’s a simple way to look at it:

Individual Therapy → Weekly or biweekly sessions, ideal for ongoing support and personal growth.

IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) → Meets approximately 3 days per week, 3 hours per session. More structured than therapy alone, with a focus on group and individual work.

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) → Meets 5 days per week, 5–6 hours per day. The most intensive outpatient option, designed for those who need daily clinical support without an overnight stay.

The right level of care depends on where you are right now, and that’s something our intake team can help you figure out. Many people move between levels as they progress, starting in PHP and stepping down to IOP, then to individual therapy over time.

Who Is PHP For?

PHP is a strong fit if you or someone you love is:

  • Stepping down from an inpatient or residential program and not yet ready for less intensive care
  • Experiencing a mental health crisis that requires daily support but not hospitalization
  • Struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, or PTSD that hasn’t responded fully to outpatient therapy
  • Dealing with co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges
  • In need of more structure and accountability than IOP alone provides

PHP is available for mental health treatment with or without a co-occurring addiction — you don’t need a substance use diagnosis to participate.

Does Insurance Cover PHP?

In most cases, yes, PHP is a covered level of care under most major insurance plans. Solutions for Change works with many of the most common providers including Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, UHC, Oscar, and Tricare.

Coverage varies by plan, so we always recommend verifying your benefits before getting started. Our team can help walk you through that process. Just call us or use the insurance verification form on our website and we’ll do the legwork for you.
